English Proficiency Requirements for International Students
University of Minnesota policy requires all international students (and non-native English speakers) to provide proof of English language proficiency required for success in college level classes as a condition of admission.
The links below show the University's minimum required scores for both undergraduate and graduate admission. However, graduate programs may have higher requirements and may not accept all items listed, therefore it is your responsibility to know your program's English proficiency requirements before you apply.

The following tests are accepted by ALL undergraduate programs and MOST graduate programs:
- TOEFL exam
- IELTS exam
- MELAB exam
- MELP ETA (the ETA is an Institutional TOEFL, otherwise called an ITP)
