Health Insurance for International Students

Find details about the Student Health Benefit Plan here.

The University of Minnesota requires all international students and their dependents to purchase the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan (SHBP) unless they are eligible for a waiver. You are eligible to waive the required health insurance if you are covered by either a U.S.-based employer-sponsored health insurance plan or U.S.-based university-sponsored health insurance plan.

At the time you arrive at the University of Minnesota, your documents are validated by MELP and you are automatically enrolled in the plan. If you do not purchase the SHBP, you will not be allowed to enroll in MELP classes.

Students who pay the Student Services Fee and have health insurance receive most services at Boynton at no additional cost. Your health insurance pays for urgent care (small emergencies), doctor & nurse fees, blood tests, etc. Your health insurance does not pay for medicine, dental care, and eyeglasses. If a doctor prescribes medicine for you, you may purchase it at Boynton Health Services, a hospital, or pharmacy. For help understanding common vocabulary words and definitions, check the Understanding Your Insurance handout.

Dental Clinics

Boynton's Dental Clinic offers comprehensive dental care including oral exams, teeth cleaning, x-rays, fillings, crowns, bridges, dental implants, same day teeth whitening, gum disease treatment, and extractions. If you have University of Minnesota student health insurance, dental visits will NOT be paid for; you will have to pay all of the dental fees. If you have your own insurance, you will need to find out if it will pay for dental costs or not.

To make an appointment for general dentistry and oral hygiene (for cleanings), call 612-624-9998. For after-hours emergency care, call the Fairview Immediate Care Clinic at 612-625-4908 (option #2).

University of Minnesota Dental Clinics operate on a fee-for-service basis. Fees vary among their programs. You should know that your dentist will be a student, not an experienced dentist.

If you have a dental emergency on a weekday, call the Immediate Care Clinic (ICC) at 612-625-4908. If you are experiencing a dental emergency on a weekend, you may contact the University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview at 612-273-3000. Treatment for dental emergencies on the weekend will be provided by dental residents. For weekend dental emergencies, such as intense pain or swelling, please go to your local emergency room for immediate treatment.
